Automation Engineer

Job Summary:
Perform a variety of duties related to conceptualizing, developing, and implementing assembly and automation solutions to solve, improve customer and manufacturing requirements. Responsible for projects involving equipment design, build and assembly, design reviews, equipment acceptance and installation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meet with customer to discuss assembly and automation and quote equipment costs.

  • Coordinate with various departments to discuss automated proposals for implementation of a standard operating process.

  • Participate in product development meetings and make recommendations for product design changes to enhance manufacturing and assembly.

  • Develop automation requirement specifications, system concepts, cad generated machine layouts, details drawings, BOM’s and budget.

  • Make evaluations and recommendations on capital equipment needed for a process. Complete capital expenditure requests for the budgeting and purchase of automation equipment. Solicit quotes from vendors, negotiate price and delivery.

  • Make, buy, or build evaluation and recommendation.

  • Conduct design reviews during construction of automation; conduct proof of concept experiments, and design of experiments tests.

  • Design and install electrical wiring and controls for automation equipment. Write, install, and debug PLC programs for automation equipment. Conduct high volume production trials utilizing new automation equipment.

  • Install automation and transfer automation programs to production in a smooth and timely manner.

  • Supervise upgrades and retrofits to existing automation equipment.

  • Develop SOP’s, operation and maintenance manuals, set-up and calibration procedures.

  • Travel required mostly in US, with stays up to two weeks.

  • Ensure a safe, clean work environment.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree and 5 years experience in related field or Associates degree in Engineering with 10 years experience in plastics or automation or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Must be proficient in solving problems using algebra, trigonometry and geometry

  • Ability to conduct experiments, observe and develop a clear understanding of the process as it relates to automation and related technologies.

  • Ability to solve practical problems involving several variables in routine situations.
