Director of Production & Operations

Reports to: CFO/COO

Position Overview: 

  • Responsible for All Print Production Functions and Supporting Staff

  • Manage all aspects of production and manufacturing department in close concert with design, edit, marketing services, and finance departments. 

  • Requires a thorough knowledge of current desktop publishing and the entire print production process, including current/new print production techniques. 

  • Prior experience in a publishing environment is strongly preferred. 

  • Previous budget management responsibilities, proven management skills and excellent written and oral communication skills required.

  • Must have Bachelor's degree, and minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in a production and customer services environment, combined with an in-depth knowledge of 4/c publication and print production including paper purchasing, pre-press, print, letter shop, database applications, postal regulations, distribution, and fulfillment. 

The job responsibilities for this position are:

  • Provide vision and demonstrate leadership by setting department goals and

  • standards and motivating employees to achieve desired goals.

  • Manage all assigned production staff including hiring, training, scheduling and retention.

  • Manage the purchasing of outside manufacturing resources, including pre-press, paper, printing, database/list management and distribution/fulfillment.

  • Manage process for insuring publications come in on budget and on schedule.

  • Maintain excellent quality control through design and management of all production processes and facilitating ongoing issue reviews in conjunction with edit, art and marketing services.

  • Manage and implement "best practices" in the department for internal processes and use of new technologies, and insure all staff is trained accordingly.

  • Contribute to one or more publications as lead production manager

  • Develop a stable of superior freelance production talent.

  • Spearhead morale building and reward programs for department.

  • Serve as problem solver for department with edit, art, marketing services and accounting.

  • Work closely with art personnel and IT to identify the hardware and software needs of the department.

  • Represent the needs of the production department in all relevant management discussions.

  • Work with new business to facilitate the contribution of production time/talent to new business pitches as required.

  • Support company sales and marketing efforts by assigning department time and talent to producing high-quality comps and collateral materials.

  • Work with editorial, production and account management to manage internal and external resources to meet fluctuating schedules for all clients/projects.
