Director of Engineering

SUMMARY: Manage and supervise the following units: Project Engineering, System Engineering, System Design, Research and Development, and Software Development.  Identify the overall direction and the management and evaluation of these units as is appropriate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:

  • Develop, implement and supervise unified (standard) engineering processes, policies and methods.

  • Organize, implement, and control project management and administration functions.

  • Create and implement product platform strategies for complete products, and create and implement a modular software platform strategy.

  • Review calculations, design assumptions, DFMA compatibility, and design strategies.

  • Assure that all projects have clear value to end customers, specific objective specifications, and solid business cases before expending resources.

  • Organize and control all lab functions including project testing and equipment testing for customers.

  • Plan and lead the product development efforts including focused project management to ensure timelines, technology, cost, and resource requirements are met.  Ensure that all projects meet or exceed customer expectations and specifications.

  • Interact with manufacturing, marketing and regulatory representatives to ensure timely transition of projects from development, to market launch, and to facilities greater efficiencies.

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP:

  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including Health and Safety, Sarbanes Oxley, Quality Standards, Environmental Policy, and Ethics Policy.

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; employee development; Planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining, employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

  • Develop employee-based skills through effective management coaching.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience: 

  • M.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

  • Ten years minimal experience in both hardware and software project engineering and project management.  Experience in managing complex software oriented projects with a strong knowledge base in Windows based development.

Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Superior organizational skills

  • Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, processional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of manager, clients, customers, and the general public. Superior written and oral communication skills. 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Reasoning Ability:

Proven problem solving ability.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Domestic and international travel is required.  The employee must have sufficient mobility to enable travel to industrial sites, offices, and facilities.
