Research Scientist / Member of the Technical Staff, Electrical Power System

Our client is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Research Scientist / Member of Technical Staff in the Data Analytics Group. The successful candidate will be expected to perform original research in the area of modeling, analysis, and optimization of electrical power systems. Further qualifications are detailed below.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development in the area of electrical power systems. Specific topics include power system load-flow analysis and steady-state and transient stability analysis. Devise new research ideas and pursue them all the way to realization in prototypes. Assist in preparing patent applications. Publication in major conferences and journals is encouraged.

  • Propose new directions and projects related to electrical power systems and applications thereof. Assist in preparing research proposals.

  • Transfer technology to business units. Travel to locations in Japan and elsewhere will be necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field. For applicants without industrial work experience, dissertation topic should be related to modeling and operation of electrical power systems

  • Strong background in load-flow analysis and circuit modeling, analysis, and simulation.

  • Good programming skills in Matlab and C/C++ and experience in using them for analysis and simulation of power systems; experience with Simulink/SimPowerSystems a plus.

  • Experience with one or more of the following areas desired: distributed generation, microgrids, renewable power sources, power systems reliability and protection, power engineering operations and planning, unit commitment, economic dispatch, load forecasting and scheduling, power systems dynamics and control, model-based diagnostics, stability analysis, large-scale dynamic systems, power grid information technology, cyber-security, and energy markets and policy.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Good inter-personal skills are essential.

  • Applicant must be quick to adapt to project needs, and able to work on multiple projects.
