Position Summary and Primary Mandates:

Perform a variety of duties related to conceptualizing, developing and implementing assembly and automation solutions to solve customer and manufacturing requirements. Responsible for projects involving equipment design, build and assembly, design reviews equipment acceptance and installation. The Automation Engineer will directly report to the Senior Director of Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meet with customers to discuss assembly and automation and quote equipment costs.

  • Participate in product development meetings and make recommendations for product design changes to enhance manufacturing and assembly.

  • Develop automation requirement specifications, system concepts, cad generated machine layouts, detail drawings, BOM's and budget.

  • Solicit quotes from vendors, negotiate price and delivery.

  • Make, buy or build evaluation and recommendation.

  • Conduct design reviews during construction of automation; conduct proof of concept experiments and design of experiments tests.

  • Manage scope changes.

  • Install automation and transfer automation programs to production in a smooth and timely manner.

  • Supervise upgrades and retrofits to existing automation equipment.

  • Develop SOP's operation and maintenance manuals, set-up and calibration procedures.

  • Other responsibilities may include working as a representative of a startup or existing production team providing technical/leadership assistance in fulfilling the automation requirements for the team.

  • Supervise project engineers, machinists and technicians; supervise and train operators and technicians during automation start-up and transfer to production, to insure production ramp successes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree and 5 years experience in a related field or Associate degree in Engineering with 10 years experience in plastics or automation or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in automation installation.

  • Ability to use small tools, programming equipment, gauges and electrical meters.

  • Working knowledge of welding, printing, painting plastics; pneumatics; hydraulics; electrical wiring; machine and mold design; pad printing; hot stamping; servo motors; packaging; sensors; drafting; robotics; PLC programming, Design of Experiments; automatic parts feeders; Autocad 2; SPC; Cadkey and computer skills a plus.

  • Significant international travel required
